In this talk, Dr. Jeffrey Morris shared how he found a passion for statistics and data science, along with the various professional uses for the field. He explored his efforts using statistics and data science during the COVID-19 pandemic to uncover insights into the virus, disease, treatments, and vaccines, and he demonstrated how the perspective of statistics and data science has been critical in discovering and communicating reliable knowledge to the public. He highlighted how misunderstandings of statistical principles, like base rate fallacy and Simpson’s Paradox, have contributed to confusion and misinformation, and how the development of strong statistics and data science skills among students can help them navigate society.
