In her recent Politico New York story, Keshia Clukey reported on the looming teacher shortage facing New York. Clukey spoke with MƒA President John Ewing and MƒA Master Teacher Molly Shabica to hear their perspective on the need to support and respect teachers and the teaching profession:

“Enrollments in education schools, applications to education schools, are plummeting — and not by a little bit. By huge amounts,” said John Ewing, president of Math for America, a fellowship program focused on creating professional development communities to support math and science teachers. “Even if there is no shortage right now, it’s pretty clear we’re headed for trouble.”

“I think the single most important thing one needs to do is to try to make teaching more attractive than it is right now as a profession. And that’s especially true for math and science
teachers, because they have a lot of options; they can do a lot of other things,” Ewing said.

To help draw and keep people
into the field, his program and others like the statewide Master Teacher Program aim to create a community where teachers can get support and connect across the state.
