Nonprofit Organization to Honor Two Outstanding NYC Teachers Each Year; Nominations Currently Being Accepted
NEW YORK, NY – Math for America (MƒA) today announced the MƒA Muller Award for Professional Influence in Education, a new honor given to two New York City public school teachers, one in math and one in science, who, during their tenure as an MƒA Master Teacher, have influenced the teaching profession in exceptional ways. The award carries a $20,000 honorarium for each teacher and a $5,000 prize for the school or organization of its nominator. Nominations will be accepted through Tuesday, May 1, 2018.
This award is made possible by financial support from MƒA Board Member Peter Muller and his wife Jillian through their Dancing Tides Foundation.
“One of the best things MƒA has accomplished is to create an environment where teachers collaborate and share best practices,” said Mr. Muller. “This prize will celebrate those who have been leaders in advancing the profession. Our family is happy to be part of the effort to make our country’s math and science education second to none. We still have a long way to go but recognizing and appreciating excellence in teaching is a great place to start.”
The MƒA Muller Award for Professional Influence in Education will be granted to an extraordinary mathematics and science teacher from within the MƒA Master Teacher community who:
- Influences and advances the broader math and/or science teaching profession with novel ideas, professional practice, and expertise
- Advocates to elevate the teaching profession and inspire others
- Invites deep dialogue and research around current issues in math and/or science education
- Embodies a commitment to peer-to-peer learning and leading
- Demonstrates a dedication to the field of math and/or science education
- Exhibits leadership within and beyond the MƒA community
“These new awards are not only a spectacular way to recognize MƒA’s most influential fellows but also a confirmation that teachers themselves can change the profession in profound ways,” said John Ewing, MƒA President. “Changing the profession is the essence of MƒA.”
MƒA fellowships encourage accomplished STEM teachers to continue teaching while building deep professional networks, learning, and leading – within our community, locally, and nationally. For teaching to be truly respected, it is essential for the voices of great teachers to be at the forefront of conversations about mathematics and science education. Teachers must be included in public discourse about educational policies, reforms, and initiatives that impact the profession of math and science teaching, as well as within their own school communities. Great teachers who use their professional influence to engage, encourage, and support others in their profession are an inspiration and warrant recognition.
Current MƒA Master Teachers who are active in, at least, their second Master Teacher Fellowship are eligible to be nominated. Beginning today professionals across the fields of math and science education are invited to nominate MƒA teachers for the award.
Finalists will be selected by an external screening committee. Winning teachers and their nominator will be recognized at an awards ceremony in June 2018. For more information, including details on the award nomination and selection process, click here.
