STEM teacher community of 976 share a passion for teaching and learning

Math for America (MƒA) today announced that 109 New York City K-12 public school teachers have been awarded four-year MƒA fellowships, growing the larger MƒA community to 976 teaching professionals who advance the profession through collaboration, learning, and leadership. Overall, MƒA Master Teachers teach in 373 schools across all five boroughs reaching over 100,000 students.

Throughout their fellowships, MƒA teachers are provided powerful opportunities to build relationships and get new ideas from similarly dedicated peers. Each year they take these ideas about curriculum, teaching, teacher professional development, and student learning from MƒA and share them with other teachers at their school. During the 2023-2024 school year:

  • More than 700 MƒA teachers said the ideas they shared from MƒA have led to better teaching practices within colleagues' classrooms at their school.
  • More than 600 MƒA teachers said the ideas they shared from MƒA have led to better professional development within their department.
  • More than 400 MƒA teachers said the ideas they shared from MƒA have led to better school-wide professional development.

“At MƒA, teachers build leadership skills through collaboration and learning, leading to better professional development in their networks and schools,” said MƒA President Maria Klawe. “We’re thrilled this new teacher cohort will join our already existing dynamic community of mathematics and science educators who share a passion for and curiosity about STEM subjects.”

MƒA believes teachers need time, space, and opportunity to work with fellow experts to keep growing throughout their careers. When they come together as a community to exchange ideas and challenge each other, they not only become better – they define teaching excellence itself. Some examples from this past year include:

“MƒA helped me to realize that I’m not an outsider looking in at the incredible talent of other teachers, but a real member as well, because of the confidence and empowerment I have gained here... I don't think I could have grown as much as a teacher as I have if I didn't have MƒA for the last nine years.”

- MƒA Master Teacher Gloria Nicodemi

More than 60% of MƒA’s teacher community said they might have left teaching during the 2023-2024 school year if not for their fellowship. MƒA teachers receive $60,000 in stipends over four years of the fellowship. Cities and states have adopted the MƒA model to create publicly funded fellowship programs showcasing that MƒA’s model works in rural, urban, and suburban school districts. Teachers can be awarded up to five Master Teacher fellowships and spend up to 20 years of their careers as part of MƒA.
