The MƒA Equity Webinars Series invites nationally recognized educators to share ideas that support equity within STEM. Following an interactive presentation by the speaker, Master Teachers have the opportunity to discuss how these ideas might be applied in their own school environments in small groups. Teachers from MƒA, other Master Teacher programs, and people interested in learning more about MƒA are invited to attend.
Climate justice is built on a core set of values and spans a wide range of relevant issues. How can we effectively teach this critically important topic? In this webinar, Dr. Deb Morrison delves into the fundamental principles of the environmental and climate justice movements.
She discusses key challenges and opportunities, including how climate change has amplified environmental injustice, climate solutions developed in collaboration with Indigenous, frontline, and fenceline communities, and transformative ways of being that can lead to more just and sustainable futures.
Dr. Morrison also shares resources developed by and for educators, including materials from the University of Washington’s STEM Teaching Tools climate learning collection and new case studies and resources from the Center for Climate Justice. These tools are designed to build educators’ capacity to teach climate justice across grades K-12.
Dr. Deb L. Morrison works at the intersection of justice, climate science, and learning. She is a climate and anti-oppression activist, scientist, learning scientist, educator, mother, locally elected official, and more.
Dr. Morrison works in research-practice-policy partnerships from local community to international scales. She works to iteratively understand complex socio-ecological systems through design-based and action-oriented research while simultaneously seeking to improve human-environment relationships and sustainability.
Deb draws on an eclectic range of justice theory to inform her work in the world and to foster her continued journey for transformative liberation. She is an extensively published author in the areas of critical race theory, intersectional equity in learning design, and the teaching of climate science and climate justice.
Dr. Morrison has won awards for climate justice and leadership in science education and serves as the Action for Climate Empowerment (ACE) Expert for the Paris Committee on Capacity-Building (PCCB) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
She lives in community and with respect in the territories of the unceded territory of multiple Coast Salish First Nations in the Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada. Information about Dr. Morrison’s work can be found at www.debmorrison.me.
