John Ewing served as MƒA President from 2008-2023. Previously, he served as Executive Director of the American Mathematical Society (1995-2008) and professor of mathematics at Indiana University (1973-1995). He has held visiting positions at Dartmouth College, the University of Virginia, Newcastle University, and Göttingen University.
Ewing received his B.S. from St. Lawrence University in 1966, which also awarded him an honorary degree in 1996, and his Ph.D. in mathematics from Brown University in 1971.
In addition to research and teaching, Ewing has been active in mathematical exposition, both as writer and editor, winning several national awards. He has written extensively on scholarly publishing and, more recently, on education. He received the MAA’s Gung-Hu Award for distinguished public service and the Horace Mann medal from Brown University. He is also a Fellow of the AAAS and the AMS.
