Over 200,000 teachers across the nation leave the profession every year. Keeping the best STEM teachers in the classroom is increasingly important. It is our greatest teachers who have the greatest effect – who ultimately shape our children and our society. At this time in our nation, we especially need teachers who have high ideals and intellectual values to share with their students – to help them become and remain responsible and compassionate citizens.

At MƒA, our long-term goal is to change society’s view of the teaching profession by changing the way our nation talks about teachers and teaching.

In the short term, our job is simpler, but still not easy: we want to keep the most accomplished teachers in the classroom longer and support them as they continue to seek new ideas to bring back to their students. We want them to stay!

That’s where our newest campaign, #WhyIStay, comes in. In addition to our day-to-day work to support teachers through our fellowships, we created #WhyIStay to highlight the multitude of reasons that teachers choose to stay in the classroom and build professional, lifelong careers. By doing so, we hope to change the way we speak about the teaching profession and recognize teaching as a respected, valuable, and important career choice.

Throughout New York City, these great MƒA teachers choose to keep teaching. Watch them share why they stay. You’ll hear bits and pieces of what MƒA does in their words, such as being part of a vibrant teacher community and having opportunities to learn, collaborate, and grow with other like-minded professionals. It is our mission to provide great teachers with these supports so they are continuously encouraged to stay.

Teachers: why do you stay? Join our campaign by sharing your video or message about why you stay in the teaching profession using #WhyIStay.
