Rayhan Ahmed

Rayhan Ahmed is passionate about his subject and deeply invested in his students: “All of my students are extremely unique with different stories to tell. I challenge them to create, imagine, dream, and build. The time we spend in the classroom is time that we learn and grow together.” Rayhan focuses on real-world applications in the classroom, which he says, “motivates students to learn challenging content.” In 2014, his students wrote and presented an original policy memo against hydraulic fracturing to the office of Senator Gillibrand using data as evidence from an original scientific research experiment they designed. “When students connect what they’re doing in class to the community – both local and at large – their work becomes authentic and worthwhile.”

An MƒA Master Teacher for the past three years, Rayhan believes, “we have new energy injected with every new cohort of teachers. Each cohort brings in brilliant people who have innovative and creative ideas to advance learning for our students.” Rayhan is an active member of the MƒA community, collaborating with other teachers regularly on lesson plans over pizza at the MƒA offices and leading a Professional Learning Team (PLT) on National Board Certification. “What I enjoy about MƒA is that it’s a place where ideas about great teaching and learning are fostered and nurtured – and that comes into practice through the workshops we participate in and lead.”

Rayhan earned his B.S. in Chemistry and Computer Science from SUNY Binghamton and M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from CUNY City College. A National Board Certified teacher, Rayhan is a member of the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards and is also a NYC Department of Education Senior Science Common Core Fellow and Model Teacher at his school.
